Project Description

Ian McManus IEA

Ian is rapidly becoming one of East Anglia’s finest exponents in the medium of watercolour. He recently had his work pre-selected for the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI) and has been awarded full membership of the Institute of East Anglian Artists (IEA). Ian also won the Ruth Hill Memorial Award for the finest painting at the first IEA open exhibition in March 2013. Having exhibited original work successfully for three annual major one-man exhibitions at Picturecraft Gallery, Ian has now prepared over 50 new watercolour paintings for release this year.

Ian’s work has developed an immediacy of style through applying paint directly to the paper without overlays of washes normally associated with watercolour painting. Ian believes this gives each finished painting a transparency and a freedom of expression. “It’s a continual learning experience, but is incredibly rewarding when it all comes together and you finish a painting that you are happy with.”

Of particular note are Ian’s paintings that convey bustling street scenes where dramatic effects of light and shade are enhanced by his confidence to incorporate complex figurative studies. Ian unashamedly confesses to have been greatly influenced by some of the finest Impressionists Painters, and holds particular high regard for Edward Seago, Edward Wesson and John Yardley.

Ian is a Full Member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists.
