Steve was born in 1950 to a Nottingham based family whose roots go back to the Derbyshire mining communities. Steve’s artistic talents were apparent from an early age and he won awards at school for his paintings. Although he would have loved to have gone on to Art College, it wasn’t to be and Steve spent his early adult years working as a draughtsman in various companies before climbing the corporate ladder within the Paper Industry. Family life and bringing up his two sons gave him little time for being creative and his unfinished paintings, carvings and artwork filled up the spare room.
A change in his personal life resulted in a new partner and a move to America, which brought about the opportunity to start painting again in earnest in his mid 50s. Steve and his new wife (who shared his common interest in art) joined a local art group in Utah, where they had settled for a short period. Encouraged by the critical acclaim of his fellow artists and the success in selling his paintings in several exhibitions in the local area, he was spurred on to taking his hobby more seriously.
On his return to England in 2008 Steve and Mita decided to settle in Suffolk in order to be near the sea which has been the inspiration for so many of his paintings. He has joined the local art group in nearby Framlingham and exhibited in their annual exhibitions and in his hometown village of Stradbroke. He also teaches a weekly adult education class for beginners in Art. Steve has had no formal training in art, is essentially self taught, and has painted in acrylics and watercolour for most of his life. However, he discovered the joys of painting with pastels while in America and this has become his favourite medium, although he has now ventured into oils as well. |
